Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions.
The core standards covered in this lesson
4.NF.B.3.D — Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole and having like denominators, e.g., by using visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem.
The essential concepts students need to demonstrate or understand to achieve the lesson objective

Act 2: Use the following information to determine which runner ran farther and by how much.
Act 3: Runner B ran $$2\frac{7}{10}$$ more miles than Runner A.
Was your estimate reasonable? Why or why not?

Problem Set
A task that represents the peak thinking of the lesson - mastery will indicate whether or not objective was achieved
5-10 minutes
Linus bought some ground beef at the grocery store. He used $$1\frac{1}{8}$$ pounds to make hamburgers. He has $$2\frac{5}{8}$$ pounds of ground beef left. How much ground beef did Linus buy at the grocery store?
A meteorologist is measuring the amount of snowfall, in inches, in various towns across Massachusetts. She records her results in the table below.
The amount of snowfall in Boston is $$\frac{3}{4}$$ inch greater than that of Pittsfield. What is the difference, in inches, between the greatest and least snowfalls?
The Extra Practice Problems can be used as additional practice for homework, during an intervention block, etc. Daily Word Problems and Fluency Activities are aligned to the content of the unit but not necessarily to the lesson objective, therefore feel free to use them anytime during your school day.
Extra Practice Problems
Help students strengthen their application and fluency skills with daily word problem practice and content-aligned fluency activities.
