  • 5.NF.B.6 — Solve real-world problems involving multiplication of fractions and mixed numbers, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem.

Foundational Standards

  • 3.MD.C.7
  • 4.NF.B.4
  • 5.NF.A.1

Criteria for Success

  1. Multiply a mixed number by a mixed number.
  2. Relate the area model to the distributive property.
  3. Solve word problems that involve the multiplication of a mixed number by a mixed number (MP.4).
  4. Estimate the product based on the size of its factors.

Anchor Tasks

25-30 minutes

Problem 1

a.   Chavone is tiling her kitchen floor. The floor is $${4{1\over2}}$$ tiles long and $${6{1\over4}}$$ tiles wide. How many tiles are needed in total for the whole kitchen? Give an exact answer that includes the fractions of a tile she will need.

b.   Chavone is also putting in a new countertop. It measures $${2{1\over4}}$$ feet wide and $${10{3\over4}}$$ feet long. What is the area, in square feet, of the countertop?

Discussion of Problem Set

  • Look at your Problem Set from today, yesterday, and the day before. What do you notice about the solutions to 1(a) on those three days? 1(b)? What do you wonder?
  • Look at #2. What error did Kyle make? What was the actual product?
  • Look at #5. How did you find the volume of the pool?
  • Look at #6. How much taller is Willis’s dad? How did you figure that out?

Target Task

5-10 minutes

Problem 1

Solve. Show or explain your work.

a.   $${4 {1\over6} \times 9 {3\over4}}$$

b.   $${3 {2\over3} \times 4 {4\over5}}$$
