Shapes and Volume

Lesson 11

Math

Unit 3

5th Grade

Lesson 11 of 16

Objective

Classify shapes as polygons versus non-polygons and classify polygons according to their number of sides.

Common Core Standards

Core Standards

  • 5.G.B.3 — Understand that attributes belonging to a category of two-dimensional figures also belong to all subcategories of that category. For example, all rectangles have four right angles and squares are rectangles, so all squares have four right angles.
  • 5.G.B.4 — Classify two-dimensional figures in a hierarchy based on properties.

Foundational Standards

  • 4.G.A.2

Criteria for Success

  1. Understand that a polygon is a closed, flat shape with straight sides.
  2. Sort figures into polygons and non-polygons.
  3. Understand that a triangle is a three-sided polygon, a quadrilateral is a four-sided polygon, a pentagon is a five-sided polygon, and a hexagon is a six-sided polygon.
  4. Classify polygons into a hierarchy based on properties (MP.7).

Tips for Teachers

Aside from the term "hierarchy", students are familiar with all of the vocabulary terms used in Lessons 11-16 from previous grade levels.

Lesson Materials

  • Polygons Template (1 per student or small group) — This material should be cut into pieces before the lesson.
  • Ruler — This can be any tool used to draw a straight line, e.g., a straightedge, a ruler, etc.

Problem 3

a.   Draw a polygon that is a triangle. Explain or show how you know it is a polygon and a triangle.

b.   Draw a polygon that is not a triangle. Explain or show how you know it is a polygon but not a triangle.

c.   Jamshid says that it is impossible to draw a triangle that is not a polygon. Do you agree with him? Explain or show your reasoning.

Problem Set

15-20 minutes

Discussion of Problem Set

  • Look at #2. What other word did you use to describe this figure? Why?
  • Look at #7. Who is correct, Edwin or his sister? How do you know?
  • What attributes do triangles and quadrilaterals have in common? What attributes do they not have in common?

Target Task
