Discussion & Writing Prompt

Edmondson says the four characteristics of a good leader are:

  1. Being transparent
  2. Acting with urgency
  3. Holding your purpose/values
  4. Sharing the power

Evaluate Creon’s leadership by applying at least three of these characteristics. Which of these characteristics does he exemplify and how so? Which of these characteristics does he not have and how does this affect his ability to lead effectively? Use any of the following vocabulary words in your response: subordinate, degrade, reckless, and/or infallible.

Close Read Questions

According to Haemon, who do the citizens sympathize with? What consequences could this have?

Consider lines 795–809. What does Haemon say about what makes a good leader? How do his use of analogies develop this idea?

What does Creon believe about ruling? What does Haemon believe? Use the word subordinate as you discuss this question.

Consider the way Creon speaks about women in this scene. Do you think Creon would have the same reaction to Antigone's defiance if she were a man? Use the word degrade as you discuss this question.
