Writing Prompt

What is Antolini’s prediction for Holden? Do you agree or disagree with his assessment? Explain.

Why does Holden leave the Antolini’s apartment so abruptly? Given what you know about Holden and his experiences thus far in the novel, what makes this decision understandable?

Key Questions

Chapter 23:

  • What major event in his life does Holden bring up again? Why does he do this?
  • How do Holden and Phoebe interact here? How is this different from other characters and Holden? Why is this?
  • What does Phoebe give to Holden and what does Holden give to Phoebe?
  • Who does Holden call and why? Be specific about this person’s character.
  • What does Holden begin to do when he leaves home? What does this indicate?

Chapter 24:

  • How does Holden characterize the Antolinis and their relationship on pp. 199–200?
  • How is Holden feeling on p. 200?
  • How does Mr. Antolini greet Holden?
  • What do we learn about his relationship with the Caulfields?
  • What do the details thus far indicate about Mr. Antolini?
  • Why didn’t Holden like Oral Expression class?
  • So far, how does Holden feel about Antolini? How does he describe him? (from pp. 199–205)
  • What does Mr. Antolini predict for Holden on p. 206?
  • Track the details Holden begins to notice about Mr. Antolini. What major theme does this further develop?
  • What do you think of Holden’s reaction to what happened on pp. 211–212?
  • Why do you think Salinger leaves this up to interpretation?
  • Is Holden overreacting? Even if he is overreacting, why is it understandable? What theme does this relate to?

Notes

  • Begin class with a chapter 23 quiz.
  • Today’s reading is a difficult one and lends itself well to a discussion of Mr. Antolini’s motives. Students will either side with Holden or Antolini.
  • Assign chapter 25 for homework. This chapter must be homework because it is the passage on the unit exam and should not be discussed in class.
