Target Task

Writing Prompt

What is the main purpose of each of paragraphs 1–10? Annotate your answers directly onto the text.

How does paragraph 4 contribute to a central idea? Explain using evidence from the text.

Key Questions

  • What is the main purpose of paragraph 1?
  • Which later paragraph most clearly reinforces the above?
  • What is the main purpose of paragraphs 3–5?
  • What is the main purpose of paragraph 6?
  • What does paragraph 8 suggest about Salinger?

Notes

  • This will be the first introduction to nonfiction reading this year. Students should know that when they read nonfiction they should always annotate for the main purpose of paragraphs. Today’s lesson is primarily skill based; tomorrow students will begin to draw connections with the actual text.
  • For homework tonight students should finish the obituary. The teacher should use this assignment to roll out at-home reading expectations.
