Writing Prompt

Write an essay in which you explain how Ralph Ellison builds the theme of identity in this chapter of Invisible Man. In your essay, analyze how Ellison uses one or more of the features listed in the box below (or features of your own choice) to strengthen his commentary on identity in American Society. Be sure that your analysis focuses on the most relevant features of the passage.

As you plan your essay, consider how Ellison uses:

  • characterization of the narrator
  • motifs and symbols
  • setting
  • characterization of secondary characters
  • the stages of the Hero's Journey

Key Questions

  • What do the yams symbolize? What does he mean when he says, "What and how much had I lost by trying to do only what was expected of me?" (p. 266)
  • How does the setting help to develop the theme of identity?
  • What other techniques does the author use?
