Key Questions

  • Ruby is in a new school for the first day. How do you infer what she is feeling? What are the clues in the story that make you think that?

  • Think Aloud: I can tell that both the narrator and Miss Hart are talking on this page. The narrator is telling the story first, because they are talking about the other characters (Ruby, Miss Heart). Then I know Miss Hart starts talking because the narrator says she’s talking. (Re-read the first few sentences if necessary).

  • Ms. Hart says “What a coincidence!” What do you think she means by that? Why?

  • Who is talking? How do you know?

  • How does Ruby feel about Angela? How does Angela feel about Ruby? What in the story makes you think that?

  • Something has changed about Angela on this page. What is it? Why do you think her feelings about Ruby changed?

  • Why does Ms. Hart keep Ruby back from lunch? What advice does she give Ruby?

  • Make an inference: Why did Ruby’s ears turn red?
