  • The king continually notices how “small” Yeh-Shen’s slippers are. In ancient Chinese culture, and until very recently, small feet in women were highly valued. Often, men would not marry women unless they had very small feet. Foot binding was a tradition that went on until the early 20th century, when it was eventually outlawed.
