A Note for Teachers

  • Due to differences in scheduling and sequencing across schools, this lesson is written assuming that students will need to both read and discuss the text in class. However, if this unit is being taught in sequence, Fishtank recommends that students complete the reading for this lesson as homework prior to class so that students have more time to meaningfully engage in analysis and discussion. Have students read the article and watch the video before discussing the Key Questions.
  • Today's lesson contains sensitive content and a reference to lynching that may be upsetting or triggering for students. Lynching is murder that is perpetrated by a group or mob of people in response to a perceived or alleged offense, without a legal trial. Although anyone can be the victim/perpetrator of a lynching, this word most often refers to the murder of Black people by a white mob. Students should understand that lynching was a widespread practice of terrorism against Black people, and the threat of lynching was an ever-present fear in the lives of African Americans—primarily, but not exclusively, in the South. As part of intellectual preparation, read the section "WHITE BACKLASH: THE KU KLUX KLAN AND THE REIGN OF TERROR" from Equal Justice Initiative's report, Lynching in America: Confronting: the Legacy of Racial Terror (Third Edition). The resource is not intended to be shared with students. Be mindful that this may be a difficult topic for students, and you may need to provide additional time for discussion.
