Target Task

Writing Prompt

In this unit, you have learned about stereotypes—and in particular stereotypes about people of Asian heritage—and the negative impact they can have on the way people view themselves and others. One way of combating stereotypes is by representing and celebrating the diversity of people within different cultures and minority groups.

Every year, the United States Postal Service produces a number of new stamps that celebrate Americans who have made "extraordinary and enduring contributions to American society, history, culture or environment." They encourage people to submit proposals for individuals they believe should be featured.

In this task, you will work in small groups to research and create a slideshow presentation about an Asian/Pacific American who you feel deserves this honor. The purpose of your informational presentation is to educate your classmates (and the United States Postal Service) about this person's accomplishments.

Your slideshow must:

  • Comprise at least four informational slides and one bibliography slide
  • Include at least three relevant images (photographs, illustrations)
  • Include an explanatory paragraph in the "speaker notes" section of each slide
  • Explain how the individual has contributed to American society
  • Be organized logically
