Writing Prompt

You have read two different texts about the American experience for Puerto Rican immigrants in the memoir When I Was Puerto Rican and in the song “America” from West Side Story.  Compare how the author and song writer Esmeralda Santiago and Arthur Laurents convey the theme of the American Dream in each text.

Key Questions


  • In the clip from West Side Story, what are Bernardo’s beliefs about the American Dream? Does he believe it is attainable? What are Anita’s? Use details from the text to support each answer. 
  • How are Bernardo and Anita symbolic of the juxtaposing Puerto Rican attitudes about immigration to NY?

  • Read the lyrics of "America" and then watch the video clip.
  • This lesson addresses one of the unit's Essential Questions.
