Writing Prompt

Reread the last paragraph. According to August Wilson, all of his plays are about what? Is Fences an exception?

Key Questions

Based on the article “August Wilson, Theater’s Poet of Black America, Is Dead at 60,”

  • What does the phrase “innumerable accolades” in paragraph five mean? Use your strategies for identifying the meaning of an unknown word (looking for contextual clues, positive or negative connotations, and root words).
  • Go back and underline three sentences that you believe connect to Fences. These could be connections about themes, characters, etc.

Based on Fences, pages 21-28:

  • p. 28 - Reread the lines below: “If my brother didn’t have a metal plate in his head...I wouldn’t have a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out of. And I’m fifty-three years old.”
  • What do these lines reveal about Troy’s character?

Notes

There are cultural references in this lesson that students may need explained:

  • Judgement Day or The Last Judgement: In Christian belief, it is the final and eternal judgment by Christ of the people in every nation resulting in heaven for some souls or hell for others. See The Last Judgment by Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel.
  • Gabriel the Archangel: In the Judeo-Christian religions, Gabriel is an angel who typically serves as a messenger sent from God to certain people. Gabriel is mentioned in both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. See The Cestello Annunciation by Sandro Botticelli.

Common Core Standards

  • RI.8.6 — Determine an author's point of view or purpose in a text and analyze how the author acknowledges and responds to conflicting evidence or viewpoints.
