Target Task

Discourse Questions

What choice does Ana make in the ending of the novel? Is this choice one of selfishness or selflessness? Ultimately, what does Ana’s choice reveal about her character and the novel’s central ideas?

How has Ana’s relationships with both Cesar and Juan shifted in Part 6? What factors are most responsible for these relationship shifts? Is this what we expected/wanted to happen as readers of the novel?

Homework

Prepare for the Summative Socratic Seminar by gathering evidence and generating ideas.

  • In Dominicana, Mamá arranges Ana’s marriage to Juan. What does Ana’s arranged marriage to Juan reveal about gender and cultural expectations for women and men in the Dominican Republic? How do the societal and cultural norms influence Ana’s psychological and moral development? To what extent does Ana resist gender and cultural norms as she comes of age in NYC?
  • Ana has complex relationships with both Juan and his brother Carlos. What role does toxic masculinity and machismo culture play in her relationship with Juan? In her relationship with Carlos? Which relationship positively impacts Ana’s identity and development as a Latina woman? Why?
  • Dominicana is a book about a 15 year old girl’s arranged marriage and coming of age. Who has more power in this text, women or men? How does Dominicana reflect, distort, or improve the place of women in society? The place of men in society? Ultimately, what does Ana’s story suggest about the relationship between gender and power?
