What is the most important line in this first half of Chapter 5? Explain what this line reveals and why this is significant.

Key Questions


  • Chapter 5 is a pivotal chapter in the novel. Your job today is figure out what makes it so pivotal. Find the most significant sentence in this chapter and explain to us what makes it so significant.
  • What makes a line of text important? (it reveals character, theme, symbolism, etc.)
  • Which lines in the opening pages of the chapter seem to meet our definition of “important”? Why?
  • What does the ”Beast” symbolize? How do you know?
  • What other lines in the chapter strike you as important? Explain.
  • With your group, examine the important lines that you have chosen, and from amongst them, select the most important line of the day. Be ready to explain what makes this line so significant.

Students should read pp. 86-94 for homework. The teacher should plan to give a reading accountability quiz at the beginning of lesson 16.
