Common Core Standards

Core Standards

  • 2.NBT.A.2 — Count within 1000; skip-count by 5s, 10s, and 100s.
  • 2.NBT.A.4 — Compare two three-digit numbers based on meanings of the hundreds, tens, and ones digits, using >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons.

Foundational Standards

  • 1.NBT.B.3

Criteria for Success

  1. Order a set of three-digit numbers.
  2. Use place value knowledge to show thinking with pictures, numbers or words.
  3. Use knowledge of locating numbers on a number line to order a set of numbers.

Tips for Teachers

  • This lesson provides an opportunity for students to practice comparing three-digit numbers by ordering numbers from greatest to least and least to greatest using their place value knowledge and/or knowledge of the number line.
  • On student explanations for ordering, listen for students to use count sequence and also some students might naturally start to think of the amount of hundreds, tens, and ones in a given number relative to its order in a greatest to least or least to greatest sequence. Also listen for students comparing the amount of hundreds, tens, and ones in three-digit numbers.
  • If you find that students need more practice on comparing 2 three-digit numbers, during the anchor tasks you can ask debrief questions that isolates the relationship between two numbers. This can be done whole group or when checking in with students during work times.
