Lesson 16

Math

Unit 4

2nd Grade

Lesson 16 of 22

Objective

Use counting to find the value of groups of dimes, nickels, and pennies.

Student-Facing

I can skip-count to find the value of dimes, nickels, and pennies.

Common Core Standards

Core Standards

  • 2.MD.C.8 — Solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, using $ and ¢ symbols appropriately. Example: If you have 2 dimes and 3 pennies, how many cents do you have?
  • 2.NBT.A.2 — Count within 1000; skip-count by 5s, 10s, and 100s.

Foundational Standards

  • 1.NBT.A.1

Criteria for Success

  1. Identify the value of a dime, nickel, and penny.
  2. Use the value of dimes, nickels, and pennies to skip-count by 10s, 5s, and 1 to find the sum of a coin collection.
  3. Skip-count starting with the highest value coin to find the sum.

Tips for Teachers

In this lesson students will learn that one way to find the sum or total of a coin collection is to start from the highest value coin and skip count by the value of each coin. In the next lesson students will continue to work on finding the value of a group of coins by skip-counting and students may also find that skip-counting by getting to a decade number may be a more efficient way to count.
