Working with Even, Odd, and Equal Groups

Lesson 10

Math

Unit 7

2nd Grade

Lesson 10 of 12

Objective

Draw rectangles to model equal groups of rows or columns.

Student-Facing

I can draw rectangles to model equal groups of rows or columns.

Common Core Standards

Core Standards

  • 2.G.A.2 — Partition a rectangle into rows and columns of same-size squares and count to find the total number of them.

Foundational Standards

  • 1.OA.D.7

Criteria for Success

  1. Partition rectangles by modeling a rectangle with square tiles and then tracing or drawing the individual squares that are used to complete the rectangle.
  2. Determine how many smaller equal-sized squares compose the larger rectangle by counting and representing with a repeated addition equation.

Tips for Teachers

Lesson Materials

  • Square inch tiles (25 per student)
  • Ruler (1 per student)

Problem 2

In the classroom, there are carpet squares that are placed in a rectangle to form a large rectangle carpet. Some of the carpet squares were ruined in an accident and had to be removed.

a.   Based on the model, how many carpet squares need to be replaced? How do you know?

b.   Draw the missing carpet squares in the model. How many equal-sized squares did you draw?

c.   Write a repeated addition equation to represent the total number of equal-sized carpet squares there are on the carpet.
