Fractions

Lesson 10

Math

Unit 6

3rd Grade

Lesson 10 of 24

Objective

Place any fraction on a number line with endpoints greater than 0.

Common Core Standards

Core Standards

  • 3.NF.A.2 — Understand a fraction as a number on the number line; represent fractions on a number line diagram.
  • 3.NF.A.3.C — Express whole numbers as fractions, and recognize fractions that are equivalent to whole numbers. Example: express 3 in the form 3 = 3/1; recognize that 6/1 = 6. Example: locate 4/4 and 1 at the same point of a number line diagram.

Foundational Standards

  • 2.MD.B.6

Criteria for Success

  1. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning to generalize when a fraction will be located at the same point as a whole number on a number line (continued from Lesson 9) (MP.8).
  2. Plot a given fraction greater than 1 on a number line that spans one whole whose lesser endpoint is not 0 by determining the fraction equivalent to the lesser endpoint and counting up by fractional units from that endpoint (MP.5).
  3. Plot a given fraction greater than 1 on a number line that spans more than one whole.

Tips for Teachers

  • Lessons 9 and 10 nicely prepare students for a more extensive discussion of the equivalence of fractions and whole numbers to come in Lesson 14.

Anchor Tasks

25-30 minutes

Problem 1

a.   Locate and label your assigned fractions on the number line. Be prepared to explain your reasoning.

  1. $$\frac{1}{2}, \frac{2}{2}, \frac{3}{2}, \frac{4}{2}, \frac{5}{2}, \frac{6}{2}, \frac{7}{2}, \frac{8}{2}, \frac{9}{2}, \frac{10}{2}$$
  2. $$\frac{1}{4}, \frac{2}{4}, \frac{3}{4}, \frac{4}{4}, \frac{5}{4}, \frac{6}{4}, \frac{7}{4}, \frac{8}{4}, \frac{9}{4}, \frac{10}{4}, \frac{11}{4}, \frac{12}{4}$$
  3. $$\frac{1}{6}, \frac{2}{6}, \frac{3}{6}, \frac{4}{6}, \frac{5}{6}, \frac{6}{6}, \frac{7}{6}, \frac{8}{6}, \frac{9}{6}, \frac{10}{6}, \frac{11}{6}, \frac{12}{6}$$

b.   List all the fractions that were located at a whole number in all three number lines that your group labeled.

c.   Use what you learned in Parts (a) and (b) to determine which of the following fractions represent the points shown on the number line below.

Problem Set

15-20 minutes

Discussion of Problem Set

  • In #1, what fractions are at the exact same point as 3 on the number line?
  • What number is at the exact same point as 12 fourths in #1?
  • What did you think about first to help you place the fractions in #3 and #4?
  • In #3 and #4, did you label all of the marks on each number line or just the fractions in the list? Why?
  • In #3 and #4, what was the first fraction that you placed on each number line? Why did you start with that one?

Target Task

5-10 minutes

Problem 1

Locate and label the following fractions on the number line.

a. $$12\over 6$$

b. $$19\over 6$$

c. $$24\over 6$$

d. $$15\over 6$$
