Measurement

Lesson 1

Math

Unit 7

3rd Grade

Lesson 1 of 12

Objective

Tell time to the nearest minute.

Common Core Standards

Core Standards

  • 3.MD.A.1 — Tell and write time to the nearest minute and measure time intervals in minutes. Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of time intervals in minutes, e.g., by representing the problem on a number line diagram.

Foundational Standards

  • 2.MD.C.7

Criteria for Success

  1. Tell time displayed on an analog clock to the nearest minute, relating this to multiplication by fives to get the nearest benchmark before the time, then counting up by ones.
  2. Given time written in standard form, draw the hour and minute hands on an analog clock to match.

Tips for Teachers

  • The demonstration analog clock is optional. It may help students with practicing counting up by fives and ones to determine the time displayed. It may also help students understand the movement of the hour hand in relation to the minute hand to be able to draw both accurately. You could also display the clocks in each of the Anchor Tasks on the demonstration clock instead of showing the images.

Lesson Materials

  • Optional: Demonstration analog clock (1 per teacher) — See Tips for Teachers for more information.

Discussion of Problem Set

  • How does multiplication using units of 5 help you read or measure time?
  • What strategy did you use to draw the hands on the clock in #2?
  • Look at #3. How many fives did you count by? Write a multiplication equation to show that. How many ones did you count on by? Write a multiplication equation to show that. How many minutes altogether?
  • How were you able to determine the time on the clock in #6 even though it didn’t have all the minute markers?
  • Look at #7. Can you share another strategy you used to tell the time on the clock other than counting by fives and ones from the 0 minute mark?

Target Task

5-10 minutes
