Measurement

Lesson 2

Math

Unit 7

3rd Grade

Lesson 2 of 12

Objective

Tell time to the minute before the hour.

Common Core Standards

Core Standards

  • 3.MD.A.1 — Tell and write time to the nearest minute and measure time intervals in minutes. Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of time intervals in minutes, e.g., by representing the problem on a number line diagram.

Foundational Standards

  • 2.MD.C.7

Criteria for Success

  1. Understand the equivalence of the standard form of time (e.g., 4:48) and the time given before the next hour (e.g., twelve minutes to 5).
  2. Determine the time in standard form when given the time in minutes before the hour.
  3. Determine the time in minutes before the hour when given the time in standard form.

Tips for Teachers

  • While Lesson 2’s objective is not explicitly part of 3.MD.1, it will help students determine elapsed time much more easily. For example, if they need to determine what time a 41-minute event that started at 5:38 ends, they may decide to find the number of minutes to the next hour, or 22, and then count forward another 19 minutes to 6:19.

Discussion of Problem Set

  • How can a clock help you convert back and forth between standard time and time to the next hour?
  • Where there particular hours that were more difficult to figure out than others?
  • What’s tricky about subtraction from an hour? How is that different from other units we’re used to, like a ten or a hundred?
