Shapes and Their Perimeter

Lesson 9

Math

Unit 5

3rd Grade

Lesson 9 of 16

Objective

Find perimeter of regular polygons and of rectangles when some side lengths are not given.

Common Core Standards

Core Standards

  • 3.MD.D.8 — Solve real world and mathematical problems involving perimeters of polygons, including finding the perimeter given the side lengths, finding an unknown side length, and exhibiting rectangles with the same perimeter and different areas or with the same area and different perimeters.

Foundational Standards

  • 3.OA.D.8

Criteria for Success

  1. Find the perimeter of a shape in which not all side lengths are labeled (e.g., a rectangle with only its length and width labeled or a regular polygon but only one side is labeled).
  2. Write an equation to represent the perimeter of a shape (optionally including simplified equations, such as a multiplication equation for a regular polygon) (MP.2).

Tips for Teachers

“Perimeter problems for rectangles and parallelograms often give only the lengths of two adjacent sides or only show numbers for these sides in a drawing of the shape. The common error is to add just these two numbers. Having students first label the lengths of the other two sides as a reminder is helpful” (MD Progression, p. 16).

Problem 1

Chris is replacing the fence around his rectangular backyard. Chris’s drawing of the backyard is shown below. Chris measured two of the side lengths and labeled them in his drawing.

How much fencing does he need to buy?

Problem Set

Discussion of Problem Set

  • I think choice A is correct in #1. What mistake did I make? (Ask similar questions for other incorrect answer choices.)
  • Did you add or multiply to find the perimeters in #2 and #4? Why?
  • How was finding the perimeter in #3 different from finding the perimeters in #2?
  • Tell your partner an addition and a multiplication equation for #6. How are the equations related? How do they represent the perimeter of the polygon?
  • How did you find the perimeter of the shape in #7? Is there more than one way to solve?
