Lesson 14

Math

Unit 8

6th Grade

Lesson 14 of 14

Objective

Analyze circle graphs in context.

Common Core Standards

Core Standards

  • 6.SP.B.4 — Display numerical data in plots on a number line, including dot plots, histograms, and box plots.

Foundational Standards

  • 4.MD.C.5
  • 6.RP.A.3.C

Criteria for Success

  1. Understand that a circle graph represents data in categories and shows relative sizes of data, with the circle representing the whole data set.
  2. Analyze circle graphs to determine missing fractional or percentage amounts or number of responses for different categories.

Tips for Teachers

  • Circle graphs as representations of data are not specifically called out in the Common Core Standards for Math, but are mentioned in some state frameworks, such as the Massachusetts 2017 Math Frameworks.
  • Students re-engage with percentages in this lesson as they solve real-world problems finding percent, part, and whole within the context of circle graphs.
  • Here are a couple different websites that you can use to create circle graphs:

Anchor Problems

25-30 minutes

Problem 1

You have a $1,500 budget for your trip to Atlanta, not including transportation costs. You have created the circle graph below to represent how you would like to spend your money on your trip. Use the circle graph to answer the questions that follow.

a.   What percent of your money did you set aside for activities?

b.   How much money do you plan to spend on hotels?

c.   How much more money did you set aside for food than for shopping?

d.   You pick up an extra few shifts at your weekend job, and you now have an additional $300 to put toward your trip. How much more money do you have for activities with the extra money?

Problem 2

A doctor recommends a diet with the following daily nutritional breakdown. Use the circle graph to answer the questions that follow.

a.   The doctor recommends equal daily portions of dairy and fruit. What fraction of your daily food intake should be dairy?

b.   One of the doctor’s patients takes in approximately 2,000 calories per day. Another patient takes in about 1,600 calories per day. How many more calories per day should the first patient be getting from protein than the second patient?

c.   A third patient says that she aims to take in 550 calories per day from vegetables. Approximately how many total calories does this patient take in daily?

Target Task

5-10 minutes

The circle graph below shows Jordan’s weekly exercise.

Jordan spends an equal amount of time playing basketball and doing dance each week. If she spent $${1{1\over2}}$$ hours playing basketball in a week, then how many total hours did Jordan spend exercising during the week?
