Understanding and Representing Ratios

Lesson 13

Math

Unit 1

6th Grade

Lesson 13 of 18

Objective

Compare ratios using tables.

Common Core Standards

Core Standards

  • 6.RP.A.3.A — Make tables of equivalent ratios relating quantities with whole number measurements, find missing values in the tables, and plot the pairs of values on the coordinate plane. Use tables to compare ratios.

Criteria for Success

  1. Look for common values in tables of equivalent ratios in order to reason about and compare situations (MP.7).
  2. Use tables of equivalent ratios and their structure to compare situations; see tables of equivalent ratios as an effective tool that can be more flexible than a double number line.

Tips for Teachers

In Lesson 7, students compared ratios by finding equivalent ratios with double number lines. Students revisit this concept of comparing ratios, but now they are able to use a more flexible tool, the table.

Problem 1

Amit and Dassana are making curry rice for their cousin’s birthday party. They each have their own recipe using a specific ratio of curry powder to basmati rice. They wonder if their rice will taste the same or different.

Use the tables of equivalent ratios below to help them decide. Support your answer with details from the tables.

Amit's Curry Rice
curry powder (tsp) rice (cups)
3 1$$\frac{1}{2}$$
6 3
12 6
18 9
20 10

Dassana's Curry Rice
curry powder (tsp) rice (cups)
5 2
7$$\frac{1}{2}$$ 3
20 8
25 10
30 12

Problem 2

Three people, Laredo, Franca, and Milton, made grape juice using water and juice concentrate (JC). The tables below show the comparison of the ingredients they each used.

Put the juices in order from the juice that has the least grape flavor to the most grape flavor.

Give your students more opportunities to practice the skills in this lesson with a downloadable problem set aligned to the daily objective.

Target Task

5-10 minutes

Hummingbird feeders can be filled with a simple sugar water mixture. Two different recipes are shown below.

Recipe 1
Water (cups) Sugar (cups)
$$2$$ $$\frac{1}{2}$$
$$4$$ $$1$$
$$16$$ $$4$$
$$28$$ $$7$$
$$32$$ $$8$$
Recipe 2
Water (cups) Sugar (cups)
$$2\frac{2}{3}$$ $$1$$
$$4$$ $$1\frac{1}{2}$$
$$8$$ $$3$$
$$24$$ $$9$$
$$32$$ $$12$$

Compare the two different recipes. Which recipe is more sugary? Justify your response.
