Key Questions

Key Questions

  • Describe what happens when Delphine calls home. How do the sisters and Big Ma each respond to the call? Why do they have different reactions?

  • Based on Cecile's behaviors, Delphine decided that Cecile did not need to be forgiven. Why does Delphine come to this conclusion? Is it fair?

  • On page 43, Delphine says they were "trained spies back in Brooklyn." What do the girls hear while spying on Cecile and her visitors? Why are they confused by what they are hearing?

  • Based on what the girls overhear, what can you infer about the Black Panthers? Why does the author include this scene?

(p. 40)

an emotional request for something

Notes

This chapter is the first introduction to the Black Panthers. Delphine tries to make sense of what she is hearing based on discussions she’s had with Big Ma, but she doesn’t fully understand. In upcoming lessons students will have a chance to build a deeper understanding of the Black Panthers and what they overhear in this chapter. Therefore, the focus of this chapter is beginning to make predictions about the Black Panthers based on the information they overhear in the chapter.
