  • Today's lesson contains sensitive content that may be upsetting or triggering for students. Emphasize respectful communication, critical thinking, and context understanding prior to engaging in today's reading. Name for students resources they can leverage within the classroom or school day to process their emotions. 
    • In particular, page 39 depicts Marji's mother slapping Marji and Mehri across the face with her hand. Page 45 depicts Marji and her friends intending to attack a classmate with brass knuckles made of nails. Page 45 also depicts Marji imagining her ears being nailed to a wall.
  • As a part of intellectual preparation, revisit student answers in the Lesson 1 Anticipation Guide, paying particular attention to questions 1, 2, and 9 to consider how to facilitate discussion during the Building Background and Engagement section of today's lesson.

  • What did the new government begin to do to revolutionaries?

  • What happens to Anoosh at the end of the chapter?

Notes for Teachers

Tonight's reading contains descriptions and drawings of torture, including one in which a penis is visible (p. 51). A character also uses the word "shit" (p. 55).
