A Note for Teachers

  • Today's lesson contains sensitive content that may be upsetting or triggering for students. Emphasize respectful communication, critical thinking, and context understanding prior to engaging in today's reading. Name for students resources they can leverage within the classroom or school day to process their emotions.
    • In particular, the sections of Persepolis that students read for this lesson contain profanity (p. 72; p. 74) and depictions of violence (p. 74; p. 76).
  • To practice cultural sensitivity and offer a balanced perspective, ensure that students understand that not all women disliked or resisted the veil; as demonstrated on page 75 of Persepolis, some women fully embraced the new requirements for women's dress. The focus of this lesson is on women who resisted these new requirements because Marji and her mother both strongly opposed the veil.

Target Task

Discussion & Writing Prompt
