Lesson 8

Math

Unit 2

5th Grade

Lesson 8 of 20

Objective

Multiply four-digit numbers by two-digit numbers.

Common Core Standards

Core Standards

  • 5.NBT.B.5 — Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.

Foundational Standards

  • 4.NBT.B.4
  • 4.NBT.B.5
  • 5.NBT.A.1
  • 5.NBT.A.2

Criteria for Success

  1. Compute four-digit by two-digit products using the standard algorithm, relating it to the area model and partial products algorithm as needed.
  2. Assess the reasonableness of an answer by rounding to estimate four-digit by two-digit products (MP.1).
  3. Solve word problems involving up to four-digit by two-digit multiplication (MP.4).

Anchor Tasks

25-30 minutes

Problem 1

Solve using the standard algorithm. If you get stuck, use an area model and/or the partial products algorithm to help. Then assess the reasonableness of your answer.

a.   $$5,803\times46$$

b.   $$63\times2,116$$
