Fishtank ELA Launch for K–8

Join a cohort of K–8 educators from across the country as you learn how to get the most out of the Fishtank ELA curriculum.

You'll work directly with the creators of the Fishtank ELA program to build your foundational understanding of the design of the curriculum, and gain hands-on experience with unit and lesson preparation that you can use in your classroom right away.

The institute contains five sessions delivered virtually via Zoom over two half days. Registration is $500 per participant with a 10% discount available for any school sending 4+ participants.

Launch (K–8) Sessions

Session 1: Setting a Vision for ELA Instruction

Dive into the research behind Fishtank ELA and explore how its core tenets are developed across grade levels and within units.

Session 2: Centering Complex Text and Knowledge Building

Learn to identify features of complexity and how to provide all students the support they need to succeed.

Session 3: Preparing to Teach a Fishtank Unit

Learn how to use Fishtank ELA resources, including the Unit Launches, to intellectually prepare to teach a Fishtank ELA unit.

Session 4: Getting the Most Out of a Fishtank Lesson

Explore Fishtank reading lesson structures, reading routines for engaging with the text, and just-in-time support to ensure all students are able to access the core text.

Session 5: Intellectually Preparing a Fishtank Lesson

Learn the protocol for intellectually preparing to teach a lesson and practice the protocol for a lesson in a current or upcoming unit.

Who should attend Fishtank ELA Launch?

This institute is designed for K–8 educators working with the Fishtank ELA curriculum. The content will be most useful for teachers who are teaching Fishtank ELA for the first time in the coming school year, or who have some experience teaching Fishtank ELA but have never experienced any Fishtank professional learning.

Do you offer Launch for high school English teachers?

We are not offering a high school Launch institute this summer, as we are still working on building out newly revised high school units. We will plan to offer this content for high school teachers in the future.

Do I need to be a Fishtank Plus subscriber to participate in this institute?

Yes, the sessions focus on leveraging the content and tools of Fishtank Plus and we highly recommend upgrading your account before participating.

Who is leading the Fishtank ELA Launch?

This institute is facilitated by our ELA curriculum and PL specialists, led by Samantha Aponte. You can learn more about Samantha in the agenda for this workshop.

Will there be any pre-work for this institute?

You will be asked to read a short section of text and watch a video orientation to the Fishtank ELA features prior to the start of Day 1 of the institute. You will receive instructions via email in the weeks prior to the institute.

Can I receive PD credits for this institute?

You will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the 2-day institute that you can submit for credits within your school system.

What should I do if I’ve already completed Fishtank ELA Launch?

You are ready to move on to the Fishtank ELA Writing Intensive, in which participants take a deep dive into the writing resources integrated into Fishtank units and lessons.
