Fishtank ELA Writing Intensive for K–5

Join a cohort of K–5 educators from across the country as you deepen your knowledge and teaching practice with Fishtank ELA curriculum. 

You’ll work directly with the creators of the Fishtank ELA program to dive into the research and design behind Fishtank ELA writing, learn to intellectually prepare a writing lesson, support students with developing sentence and paragraph writing skills, leverage Target Tasks, and provide effective student feedback.

This intensive contains five sessions delivered virtually via Zoom over two half days. Registration is $500 per participant with a 10% discount available for any school sending 4+ participants.

Writing Intensive (K–5) Sessions

Session 1: Setting a Vision for Writing Instruction 

Dive into the research and design behind Fishtank ELA writing and explore why Writing to Learn and Learning to Write are essential parts of the ELA curriculum. 

Session 2: Intellectually Preparing and Structuring a Fishtank ELA Writing Lesson

Learn the protocol for intellectually preparing a Fishtank ELA writing lesson and use the protocol on an actual lesson. Learn how to structure writing lessons to ensure student success by watching classroom footage of different writing strategies and applying them to a writing lesson.

Session 3: Sentence and Paragraph Writing

Learn how to support students with developing sentence and paragraph writing skills within particular lessons and across units. 

Session 4: Leveraging Target Task Writing

Learn how to leverage daily Target Task writing to ensure that students are both learning to write and writing to learn.

Session 5: Giving Writing Feedback

Learn how to determine what feedback to give students and strategies for ensuring feedback is actionable for students.

Fishtank ELA Writing Intensive (K–5) FAQs

Who should attend the Fishtank ELA Writing Intensive Workshop?

This intensive is designed for K–5 educators working with the Fishtank ELA curriculum. Participants must complete the Fishtank ELA Launch series and have at least one year of teaching Fishtank ELA in their classrooms prior to attending the Writing Intensive.

Do you offer the Writing Intensive for middle and high school English teachers?

We are not offering a middle or high school version of the Writing Intensive this summer. We hope to be able to offer this content for middle and high school teachers in the future.

Do I need to be a Fishtank Plus subscriber to participate in this workshop?

Yes, the Writing Intensive focuses on leveraging the content and tools of Fishtank Plus and we highly recommend upgrading your account before participating.

Who is leading the Fishtank ELA Writing Intensive Workshop?

Can I receive PD credits for this workshop?

You will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the 2-day workshop that you can submit for credits within your school system.
