Common Core Standards

Core Standards

  • 5.NBT.B.7 — Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.

Foundational Standards

  • 5.NBT.A.1
  • 5.NBT.A.2
  • 5.NBT.A.4
  • 5.NBT.B.5

Criteria for Success

  1. Multiply a single-digit whole number by 1 tenth or 1 hundredth.
  2. Explain why the product of a whole number and 1 tenth or 1 hundredth is one tenth or one hundredth as much, respectively (MP.3).
  3. Multiply a single-digit whole number by a single-digit multiple of 1 tenth or 1 hundredth.
  4. Estimate the product of a single-digit whole number and a decimal by rounding the decimal to its largest place value.

Discussion of Problem Set

  • I saw the following answers for #2(c): 1 and 8 tenths, 18 tenths, and 180 hundredths. Which answer is correct? Is more than one correct? How do you know?
  • What do you notice about #2(d) and #2(f)? Why is that the case?
  • What do you notice about #6(c) and #6(d)? Why is that the case?
  • What was the product in #6(f)? What made this problem more challenging than the previous ones in #6?
  • What did you estimate each product to be in #8? Which estimates do you think will be greater than their actual products? Less than? How do you know?
