According to the story from Genesis that you read today, what impact did Adam and Eve's experience in Eden have on mankind?

Many students consider Lord of the Flies to be, at least in part, an allegory for the biblical story of “The Fall of Man”. Using evidence from both the biblical passage and Chapter 8, explain how the chapter functions as an allegory.

  • pp. 125 and 126 - What is the conflict between Jack and Ralph?
  • p. 126 - Why does Jack leave? Why is this important?
  • p. 128 - “What else is there to do?” What is Simon’s tone here? How do the others react? What does Simon mean? (This is one of the most important lines in the novel.)
  • Why are the boys considering moving the fire?
  • What does the Beast represent? How is it intensifying here?
  • How have the boys’ lives changed in the first half of this chapter? In the first half of the book?
  • How does this relate to the biblical story of the Garden of Eden?
  • What do the other boys think of Simon? And of his decision on p. 132?

Notes


Lesson 21 will focus on a close reading of Simon's interaction with the "Lord of the Flies" on pp. 143 and 144. Assign pages 132-144 for homework so students come ready to close read.
