Find the value of some combination of dollar bills and coins.

  • 4.MD.A.2 — Use the four operations to solve word problems involving distances, intervals of time, liquid volumes, masses of objects, and money, including problems involving simple fractions or decimals, and problems that require expressing measurements given in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Represent measurement quantities using diagrams such as number line diagrams that feature a measurement scale.

Criteria for Success


  1. Write quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies as fractional and decimal units of a dollar.
  2. Find the total value of a combination of dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies and express the value as a fraction and decimal. 
  3. Find various combinations of coins that add up to a given amount.

Tips for Teachers


  • “Students…combine competencies from different domains as they solve measurement problems using all four arithmetic operations, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division” (MD Progression, p. 20). Thus, students will work with money recorded as decimal quantities in this lesson, connecting the supporting work of measurement problems (4.MD.2) across domains to the major work with decimals (4.NF.C).

  • How is money related to decimals and fractions? How is it different? 
  • I have $${{2\over5}}$$ dollar in my pocket. Use what you know about equivalent fractions to determine how many cents I have. What are some possible combinations of coins that may be in my pocket? 
  • Are $1 and $1.00 equal? Are $0.1 and $0.10 equal? Are all these forms correct? Which form may not be used frequently and why?
  • When adding fractions and whole numbers, we sometimes complete the next whole or the next hundred to convert it to an easier problem. How, in #4b, could you decompose 8 dimes to convert this to an easier problem?
  • Did anyone attempt #5? Would you believe it is more than $1.00?

Find the total value of the coins and/or bills. Write your answer in fraction and decimal form.

a.   2 quarters and 4 nickels

b.   3 quarters, 2 dimes, and 7 pennies

c.   5 dollars, 3 quarters, 6 nickels, and 14 pennies
