Objective


Prove that the opposite sides and opposite angles of a parallelogram are congruent.

  • G.CO.C.11 — Prove theorems about parallelograms. Theorems include: opposite sides are congruent, opposite angles are congruent, the diagonals of a parallelogram bisect each other, and conversely, rectangles are parallelograms with congruent diagonals.

Criteria for Success


  1. Use parallel line angle relationships to determine that opposite angles of a parallelogram are congruent. 
  2. Determine that the converse is true, that if two pairs of opposite angles are congruent, then the figure is a parallelogram. 
  3. Determine the congruency of two triangles formed in a parallelogram by an auxiliary diagonal, and thus prove that opposite sides of parallelograms are congruent. 
  4. Use these established facts about parallelograms to prove relationships in geometric diagrams.
