Target Task

Writing Prompt

Is one speech more persuasive or effective than the other in developing an argument? Provide at least two specific comments/thoughts from the discussion.

Key Questions

  • Do the two speeches share more similarities or differences?
  • Is one speech more persuasive or more effective than the other?

Notes

Instructional Notes

  • It is recommended that students engage in a small-group or whole-class discussion today about the speeches made by Truth and Stewart. The key questions can serve as a starting point, and students may add in their own questions as well.
  • Today is the final lesson prior to the unit assessment, an on-demand rhetorical analysis that students will independently complete over two class periods. In addition to the discussion, using the two speeches as the basis for a review of the skills from the entire unit would be helpful.
