  • Look at the illustrations on pages 20-21. How do they help you understand what’s happening at the party?

  • What just happened? Why?

  • How do the neighbors come together to support Xochitl and her family?

  • Model fluent reading: Read Don Roberto’s dialogue. Ask: “What did you notice about my voice when I read Don Roberto’s words?

  • At the end, mami takes some dirt that she had saved from El Salvador and spreads it in the garden. Why?
