Key Questions

Poem Questions:

  • What is Jenny’s problem?
  • What is the poet asking in stanza 3?
  • What is this poem about?

Chapter 22 Questions:

  • What is Holden trying to do at the start of this chapter? How does Phoebe react?
  • Make note of the line on p. 184 that is an example of irony.
  • What are Holden’s qualms with Pencey Prep?
  • Why is Holden able to talk to Phoebe so much here?
  • What question does Phoebe ask Holden and why can’t he answer it?
  • Holden reveals a major experience on pp. 186–188. Track this in detail.
  • How do you think this experience affected Holden?
  • What is the only thing Holden likes?
  • Explain Holden’s misconception about the lyrics of the poem. What word does he place into the poem that does not originally belong?

Notes

  • The poem can be given as an independent Do Now.
  • Note that this chapter highlights an important event for Holden. While it is not explicitly asked in the Target Task, students should infer that the beginning of Holden’s fall from innocence was watching the “suicide” of the boy from Pencey (and the boy was wearing Holden’s turtleneck).
  • Assign chapter 23 for homework.

Next
