Writing Prompt

How does Shakespeare reveal Macbeth’s humanity in this scene? Be sure to thoroughly explain the techniques he uses and give examples to support your answer.

Key Questions

  • What happens at the banquet?
  • How does Macbeth's reaction add to or detract from his character? What do we learn about him?
  • What does he claim about the dead in line 91? What does he mean?
  • In line 151, what does “blood will have blood” mean?
  • What does Macbeth admit in line 168?
  • What do Lady Macbeth's reactions tell you about her?
  • What does Lady Macbeth seem to realize over the course of this scene? Use evidence to defend your answer.

Notes

  • Macbeth hallucinates for the second time here but in a very public way. Lady Macbeth realizes that her husband hallucinates when a murder happens (Duncan, dagger) and quickly moves to cover up for her husband. It is clear Macbeth is unraveling in this scene as he yells at the ghost of Banquo as if it is real.
  • This scene lends itself very well to a whole-class read-aloud.
  • Assign Act 3.5 for homework.
