Read the following quote from the chapter:

“Damned if you do and damned if you don’t.”

Take into account the context of the chapter, the article, and your own knowledge. Do the benefits outweigh the side-effects of medication? Who should get to decide what is best, the patient or the doctor? Why?

  • What is literally happening to Sefelt on p. 176?
  • What does the sentence “I can taste the slivers” reveal about the narrator on p. 176?
  • What is the intended effect of Nurse Ratched’s repetition on p. 176-177?  
  • What is “wrong” with Mr. Sefelt?
