Adding and Subtracting Within 1,000

Lesson 14

Math

Unit 5

2nd Grade

Lesson 14 of 25

Objective

Use concrete manipulatives to subtract within 1,000 with no decompositions.

Student-Facing

I can use base ten blocks to subtract within 1,000 with no decompositions.

Common Core Standards

Core Standards

  • 2.NBT.B.7 — Add and subtract within 1000, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method. Understand that in adding or subtracting three-digit numbers, one adds or subtracts hundreds and hundreds, tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose or decompose tens or hundreds.

Foundational Standards

  • 1.NBT.B.2
  • 2.NBT.A.1
  • 2.NBT.A.2

Criteria for Success

  1. Build a three-digit number to represent hundreds, tens, and ones for minuend in the problem with base ten blocks.
  2. Subtract 2 three-digit numbers with no decompositions using base ten blocks.

Tips for Teachers

  • For this lesson, students will practice building three-digit numbers and subtracting two-digit or three-digit numbers within 1,000. The situations practiced within this lesson require no decomposition to allow for students to attend to precision with subtracting by place value. Be sure that students know that in a situation like 489 - 234 the 4 in 234 represents 4 ones– not 4 hundreds like in the whole.
  • In the Target Task for this lesson, part c includes a computation where students decompose a ten in order to subtract. This is what they have experience with from their work in Unit 2 and serves as data to support students in the next lesson.

Lesson Materials

  • Base ten blocks (10 hundreds, 18 tens, 18 ones per student)
  • Hundreds place value chart (1 per student) — Work Mat Template — These should be laminated or in sheet protectors to reuse
