  • 2.NBT.B.7 — Add and subtract within 1000, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method. Understand that in adding or subtracting three-digit numbers, one adds or subtracts hundreds and hundreds, tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose or decompose tens or hundreds.

Criteria for Success


  1. Build three-digit numbers to represent hundreds, tens, and ones for 2 addends in the problem. 
  2. Combine like units together to add. When there are more than 9 of a given unit, exchange 10 units for one of the next larger unit (i.e., 10 ones for 1 ten or 10 tens for 1 hundred).

Tips for Teachers


If students struggled with making a new ten in the Target Task from Lesson 4 before the lesson, review two-digit addition situations where a new ten is made using base ten blocks, drawings, and abstract strategies to support the work of the lesson with three-digit numbers. 

Lesson Materials

  • Base ten blocks (10 hundreds, 18 tens, 18 ones per student)
  • Hundreds place value chart (1 per student) — Work Mat Template — These should be laminated or in sheet protectors to reuse
